OnePlus teases foldable phone announcement for tomorrow

Back in 2019, Pete Lau, the CEO of OnePlus, said that there are no plans for a foldable phone anytime soon. A year later, the founder revealed in an interview that existing technology isn’t good enough for foldable phones. Based on the standpoint of the manufacturer, we do not expect a Galaxy Z Fold rival from them anytime soon. However, it appears OnePlus has a surprise for us tomorrow according to a teaser it posted earlier today.

Little else was revealed in the teaser, including what exactly the device is and what we should expect, but it's safe to assume OnePlus will announce whatever it has cooked up on the same day and time that Samsung is widely rumoured to update its Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold ranges. The thing is, the device in OnePlus' teaser looks awfully similar to the forthcoming Galaxy Z Fold 3.

Just now, on Twitter, the official OnePlus account shared something pretty enigmatic. The tweet includes a video clip of what appears to be a foldable phone or, possibly, a dual-display phone. The tweet’s text simply reads “8.11 10am ET.”

We’ve not seen or heard any rumors about any new OnePlus hardware, which leads us to believe it may be announcing a concept device. At first glance, the teased device looks to be a foldable one, but upon closer inspection it becomes clear that this device has two displays that might be joined by a hinge and not actually a flexible display that folds like Samsung’s.

All we can gather from the teaser is that there are two displays with minimal bezels, the left side of one display has a volume rocker, and the right side of the other display has a power key and physical alert slider. We are curious to see what OnePlus is going to announce, but it doesn’t seem like we’ll be getting any hands-on with whatever it is for a while.
